Turbo vs. Supercharger vs. NA vs. Nitrous

Like always I receive emails about people stating that one form is better then the other, my intention is to make it clear what's better for what purpose based on these engines.

Since I've been around most forms of auto sports including lesser known ones like hill climbing, I see what different fields look for in their engines, some need all time power while others only need it somewhere in the power band.

Here is a comparison cost wise:

Small hp improvement (up to 40hp)

  • NA- Intake, exhaust and chipping will usually see this power increase.
  • Nitrous- A 40hp shot of nitrous is usually cheap to install and requires no internal mods.
  • Turbo- Low boost kit will require no internal mods but may be costly for such low power increase.
  • Supercharger- Most kits are expensive because of the supercharger itself, same as a turbo.

Medium hp improvement (40-100hp)

  • Nitrous- A 100hp shot of nitrous is usually cheap to install and only requires forged pistons.
  • Turbo- Intercooler. Will eventually require low compression forged pistons to prevent engine failure.
  • NA- High compression, ported head, cam, larger valves, pistons, rods, lighter flywheel.
  • Supercharger- Same as turbo but supercharger carries a higher price.

Large hp improvement (100hp+)

  • Turbo- Forged pistons, intercooler, and eventually will need rods. Ported head etc will help to attain the power but is not necessary until 200hp+.
  • Nitrous- A 100hp+ shot of nitrous is usually cheap to install and requires forged pistons, rods, ported head.
  • Supercharger- Same as turbo but supercharger carries a higher price.
  • NA- 12:1 compression or more, race fuel, highly modified head, pistons, rods, lighter flywheel, crank

I have an article comparing these forms from Hot Rod magazine but I have to look into copyright issues before uploading it to the site, sorry.
